PUNTACANA Resort in the Dominican Republic requested that the studio place a significant number of private homes and a range of hotel rooms on an undeveloped ocean front parcel in the heart of the resort. They were stressing a sustainable approach to the project to enhance the marketability of the product. I had the unusual opportunity to work cross discipline in conjunction with Monica Franklin a MAUD student to devise an appropriate strategy for the site as a whole and project details. Monica and I worked in collaboration to strategize the architecture with overall landscape objectives which include: Indoor/outdoor design, enhancement of habitat potentials, integrated storm water management and landscape systems. We devised a lagoon strategy that allows for views, active landscape systems, habitat possibilities and higher density. The homes were designed with a varying green wall system that changes along the boardwalk pathway as the ocean influence increases and salt content rises. The green wall which residents would actually benefit most from is their neighbor’s. The green wall becomes a pier system which carries storm water to the lagoons. The pier leads to a private space for lounging and sunning. The studio critics nominated this project for the Harvard GSD Studio Works publication.
